Vijay CC rides on Indrajith’s ton

    B. Indrajith’s unbeaten century gave Vijay CC the all-important first-innings lead in its match against Jolly Rovers CC on the second day of the TNCA first division elite championship final on Monday.
At stumps on day two, Vijay CC was 259 for six in response to Jolly Rovers’ 212 and with only one day of play left, Vijay CC will feel it already has one hand on the crown.
Indrajith displayed solid defence when the team was in trouble and then cut loose later, playing aggressively to score his first century of the season that included 11 fours and two sixes.
Similar patternEarlier, Vijay CC’s innings followed a similar pattern to that of Rovers. It lost early wickets and the chase was in trouble at 66 for four with Piyush Chawla dismissing the century-makers in the semifinals — Dinesh Karthik and K.B. Arun Karthick.
It was then left to skipper R. Prasanna and B. Indrajith to rebuild the innings and they did that with a 74-run partnership. But it could have been more trouble for Vijay CC had Prasanth Parameswaran held on to a catch at mid-off offered by Prasanna off the bowling of Chawla when the batsman was on 28 with the score reading 76.
Prasanna and Indrajith showed application in the post-lunch session as the duo eschewed risks and rotated the strike well to keep the scoreboard moving steadily.
However, the defending champion pulled things back with two quick wickets before tea, first when R. Satish removed Prasanna caught behind coming round the wicket and then left-arm spinner D.T. Chandrasekar dismissed Vijay Shankar to make it 161 for six.
But, Malolan Rangarajan and Indrajith steadied the ship and even picked up regular boundaries in their 108-run unbeaten partnership.
After reaching his fifty, Indrajith attacked the spinners, playing some late cuts through the third-man region. At the other end, Malolan too went after the bowlers as he brought up his fifty.
The scores (second day): Jolly Rovers 212 in 83.2 overs vs Vijay CC 259 for six in 90 overs (B. Indrajith 108 n.o., Malolan Rangarajan 52 n.o., R. Prasanna 48).
